Inland North County Information
LAYTONVILLE, COVELO, LEGGETT, PIERCY
|
Mendocino County’s northern inland area is a large sparsely-populated expanse of Northern California wilderness. The appeal of rugged adventure, nature, and living off the land await anyone up to the challenge.
As Highway 101 heads north from Willits, it runs through the towns of Laytvonville, Leggett, and Piercy before reaching the Humboldt County line. From Laytonville, Highway 162 runs east to Covelo and west to the coastal town of Westport.
LAYTONVILLE
Laytonville, about 20 miles northwest of Willits claims about 1,300 residents. Laytonville got its start when F.B. Layton built a home and blacksmith shop in 1874. Today, Laytonville carries on the pioneer spirit with ranch life and rodeos, as well as timber harvesting. In keeping with Mendocino County’s mix of old and new, Laytonville participates in the annual Earthdance: The Global Dance Festival for Peace.
COVELO
With about 1,200 residents, Covelo sits roughly 14 miles northeast of Laytonville in an area commonly known as Round Valley. Wine-making and organic farming are making their place in the remote valley. Covelo annually hosts the Blackberry Festival, the Round Valley Community Rodeo, the Round Valley Harvest Festival, and, in keeping with its rich Native American heritage, the California Indian Day celebration.

LEGGETT AND PIERCY
Leggett and Piercy are very quaint towns with basic amenities for travelers and locals. This area is a focal point for taking in California’s majestic Redwoods. This is where Highway 1 comes inland from the coast and meets with Highway 101. Smithe Redwood Reserve, Standish-Hickey State Recreation Area, Confusion Hill (amusement/mystery park), and the Chandelier Drive-Through Tree all center about this breathtaking region.
Real estate in northern inland Mendocino County reflects the same diverse range of property types as the rest of the inland areas as far as older to newer homes and small lots to large acreage. However, cabins and smaller homes on multiple-acre parcels are more common in these more remote areas.
