Ukiah is the county seat and Mendocino County’s most urban area, with a population of just over 15,000. The city’s influence in adjacent and nearby areas expands that number to about 40,000 people directly using Ukiah’s services. The name Ukiah is a European interpretation of Yokayo, a Pomoan term for “Deep Valley.”

The Yokayo or Ukiah Valley is nestled in coastal ranges which seem to buffer the valley from extreme weather conditions. The long warm summer is cooled by a nightly coastal breeze and Indian Summer brings occasional warm days through December.

While the valley has distinct seasons, they are mild and shared valley-wide, from Hopland and Talmage in the south to Calpella and Redwood Valley in the north, making agriculture the heartbeat of the land.

Lake Mendocino, just minutes northeast of Ukiah, is a 1,800-acre surface area lake. The lake provides campgrounds, day-use facilities, beaches, boating, skiing, fishing, and multiple hiking trails. The Pomo Cultural Center sits above the day-use areas.

Homes for sale in Ukiah typically range from affordable starter homes to authentic Victorians to custom-built homes with all of the current amenities, as well as a smattering of vineyard estates in outlying areas.

TALMAGE
Talmage lies to the southeast of Ukiah and east of Highway 101, joining with Hopland by way of Old River Road. Talmage is a sprawling rural community and home to the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas. The town of Talmage is lined with older affordable homes, while the outlying area features larger properties, vineyards, and quiet country living.

CALPELLA
Calpella is a tranquil rural community that joins Ukiah with Redwood Valley on the east side of Highway 101. Calpella encompasses the western side of Lake Mendocino and provides a quick access to the lake’s day-use areas and Pomo Cultural Center from Highway 101 and Ukiah. Real estate in Calpella is a blend of single family homes on country-size parcels and rolling hills of grape vines with an occasional home perched on a hilltop.

HISTORY:
Following the establishment of Mendocino County when California attained statehood in 1850, Samuel Lowry became known as Ukiah’s first settler when he constructed a log cabin at a corner of Perkins and Main Streets in 1856.  From there a town began to develop with the addition of a post office and hotel two years later.  Harrison Standley built the hotel, as well as served as Ukiah’s first Postmaster.

Mendocino County was governed by Sonoma County until 1859 when it became self-governed and Ukiah was named as the county seat.  Construction of a courthouse in Ukiah and publication of a local newspaper (Mendocino Herald) followed in 1860.  The City of Ukiah was incorporated in 1876.

Rails brought the first steam train to Ukiah in 1889, creating Ukiah’s first real estate boom with bare parcels rising five-fold from $30.00 to $150.00.  Commercial trade, businesses, and professionals quickly followed and Ukiah moved into the twentieth century as a viable and growing part of California.

The lumber boom of the 1940s and demand for Redwood brought new life to Mendocino County and to Ukiah, as it’s commercial and governmental center.
